Puppy Classes Mona Vale

Puppy School at Mona Vale Vet Hospital – with Veronica’s Canine Concepts

The first 16 weeks of a puppy’s life are crucial and there is so much for your puppy to learn and discover. Our puppy classes will set your puppy up for success in becoming a happy and well adjusted member of the family. Time and effort spent in the early weeks with your puppy will pay dividends in the future and we are here to support you and answer all your questions as you navigate those early days.

In puppy class you will learn about socialisation, developing independence and preventing separation anxiety, preventing problem behaviours, enrichment, nipping and biting, toilet training, basic obedience skills (come, sit, drop, stay, leave), polite manners, grooming and much more!

Our aim is always to set your puppy up for success, by rewarding in small progressive steps the behaviours we want, while preventing the practice of unwanted behaviours.

Even before your puppy arrives home we recommend you book your FREE Puppy Consultation with our qualified Veterinary Nurses (within 48 hours of bringing your puppy home) and lock in your spot at Puppy School as spaces fill quickly!

WHAT DO WE TEACH IN PUPPY CLASS??

During our program, you and your puppy will learn new skills for at home, out and about, and everyday living with your newest family member.

We cover what socialisation actually means, busting common myths, preventing separation anxiety, nipping/biting, toilet training, how to use management throughout puppyhood and life!

Skills learnt will include Look at Me, Sit stay, Drop stay, Come to a Sit and some Heel work. We cover effective communication, all-important play, outlets and building an amazing relationship with your puppy!

We also introduce appropriate best handling for vet visits, grooming and home care.

Your puppy will associate visits to our hospital as a fun, positive and social place, rather than being a place only visited for vaccinations, surgery or when they are unwell.

There is a LOT of content in puppy class and a lot of information to take in (because a lot goes into successful puppy raising) so we give you detailed follow up content after each class to refresh what you’ve learned – notes, videos & handouts to suit your individual learning style!

Why should a puppy attend class?

You may wonder whether puppy class is an “optional extra”, but those first 4 months are critical!

This is where we lay the foundation stones of your dog’s adult life, and when experiences (good & bad) are permanently imprinted in their brain.

Puppy class gives you the knowledge to avoid common mistakes and pitfalls which can take years and $$ to unwind months down the track.

A high quality puppy class taught by an experienced, educated & qualified trainer will set you up with the tools to handle common puppy problems as they arise, and raise your puppy to reach their full potential.

Equally importantly, puppy class is also about identifying and resolving problems in the early stages before they become established and a larger problem, that is much harder to resolve.

Most puppies sail through class, but it’s common for issues and concerns to crop up. We always say it’s great if an owner notices issues in the critical early stage because it gives you the opportunity to change things!

It’s so easy to get the wrong advice & unintentionally end up with bigger problems from something that could have been easily resolved early with the right advice, while a puppy is still in their critical learning phase.

Puppy class taught by an experienced, educated & qualified trainer will set you up with the skills to raise your dog to be their best.

At what age should a puppy attend school?

In light of understanding canine learning and development, the timing of puppy school is vital.

The critical phase of learning for a dog is between the ages of 3-12 weeks. This extends to 16 weeks for some areas of learning.

For this reason we recommend that your puppy joins our puppy school before they reach 12 weeks of age, although we can take puppies up to 14 or occasionally 16 weeks (contact Veronica if you are unsure). Ideally, you would start class when your puppy is between 8-10 weeks old.

Testimonials

From Our Visitors

The girls (and guys now) have looked after our four legged kids for over 20 years. They have a very caring and patient approach, particularly with insecure dogs. They always put 100% into doing their best in ensuring that our animals get the best of care. We moved into the city in 2014, we tried a number of vets but did not receive the same level of care so returned to Mona Vale. We can’t recommend them enough.
