Mona Vale Vet Wellness Checks

Wellness Check Mona Vale

At Mona Vale Veterinary Hospital our aim is to keep pets healthy!

Part of this is regular veterinary health checks (wellness checks) in which one of our vets performs a full physical examination to ensure that everything is working how it should be and to tailor a plan to ensure that everything stays that way!

Bringing your pet in for an annual wellness check can help reassure you that your dog or cat is healthy or help us detect hidden diseases or conditions early. Early detection can improve the prognosis of many diseases, keep medical costs down, and help your pet live longer.

Many dogs and cats are good at hiding signs that something is wrong, so subtle changes in their health or behaviour might be easy to overlook. And, depending on the disease, some pets don’t show any symptoms.

What happens at my pet’s Wellness Check?

We generally start at the head and work down to the tail checking things as we go – teeth, ears, eyes, lymph nodes, heart, chest, general body shape, joints and spine, any lumps and bumps, skin and temperature. Some exams focus on particular aspects more than others depending on the age and stage of your pet.

Routine blood (and perhaps urine) tests are another way that we can gain information about your pet and pick up any early indicators of disease. This becomes even more important as your pet ages.

Another part of the wellness check is to discuss and determine what your pet needs in terms of preventative health tools. This will cover diet, dental care, coat health (shampoos etc.), external parasite control (flea and ticks) and internal parasite control (gut worms and heartworm) and vaccination if indicated.

All these elements need to be tailored for your pet and a plan established for the coming year.

How often does my pet need a wellness check?

This depends on the age and stage of your pet but as a general guide;

  • Puppies and kittens need checks every 4-6 weeks until 6 months, then at 15 months.
  • Adult dogs and cats have yearly wellness checks until they reach their senior years at around 8 years of age
  • Senior pets – we recommend health checks every 6 months.

It’s all about tailoring the care to suit your pet’s individual needs – let us help you determine what is best for YOUR pet!

Because you spend the most time with your pet, you are your pet’s expert, as well as his or her greatest advocate. Please let us know if you’ve noticed any physical or behavioural changes in your pet, as well as any other concerns you might have.

Call us today to schedule your pet’s exam! If you have any questions, we would be happy to discuss our wellness health checks in more detail.

Testimonials

From Our Visitors

The girls (and guys now) have looked after our four legged kids for over 20 years. They have a very caring and patient approach, particularly with insecure dogs. They always put 100% into doing their best in ensuring that our animals get the best of care. We moved into the city in 2014, we tried a number of vets but did not receive the same level of care so returned to Mona Vale. We can’t recommend them enough.
